Memo from the King of Shibuya.
(AUDIO: Mic Check by Cornelius, 1997)
If anyone’s left existing in a world without Tokyo’s sonic-collage pioneer, Cornelius, this is yr big chance. He basically reinvented the sound of Japanese elecontric music with 1997’s Fantasma LP, released on Matador Records in the USA.
As the almost-original magnetic-tape splicer (Jean-Jacques Perrey before him, in 1965), Cornelius wove Beethoven samples, Planet of the Apes-themes, 90s hip-hop beats, and a helluva lot of moog, theremin and analog outer space blips into this profoundly relevent 60-min LP.
If you’ve really never listened to Mic Check, grab a pair of your best friend’s Sennheizers, get lit and let it play.
