‘Autumnal’ doesn’t mean ‘The Fall.’
(VIDEO: God Help the Girl: The Story)
Belle & Sebastian have grown up. Stuart Murdoch has written a three-character musical narrative, soon to be adapted as a feature film; shooting is scheduled for 2010. The soundtrack, released before the film’s production has even begun, has a warm and hauntingly familiar sound. Featured on this unlikely concept album are warm strings, low-key brass, thick Scotish accents and fey stories told about lonely teenage girls, introspective outsiders, schoolyard bullies and inevitably, their ‘autumnal’ escape through daydreaming and twee heartbreak. Like most of his work, God Help the Girl will effortlessly become more about how people listen, rather than what’s being said.
